Request language assistance
State your language needs
Explain which spoken language and, where relevant, dialect you are most comfortable using. Mention whether interpretation is needed for a consultation, procedure discussion or administrative arrangements. Give advance notice so the team can confirm availability, the proposed format and any associated charges.
Prepare for the appointment
Write down your questions and bring an up-to-date medicine list and relevant reports. Ask whether documents need translation separately from spoken interpretation. If a family member will accompany you, explain their role while ensuring you can speak directly with the clinician through the agreed interpreter.
Check your understanding
Ask for unfamiliar terms to be explained and take time to clarify the proposed plan. Before signing a document or agreeing to treatment, make sure your questions have been addressed. Request written instructions in a format you can understand and confirm how later questions will be handled.
