Check the publication details
For a paper you want to discuss, keep the title, authors, journal and publication year, or a DOI or database link. Confirm that the author is the clinician you mean, as similar names are common. Note whether the paper is research, a review or an individual case report.
Consider what the study can show
Study design, participant numbers, comparison groups and follow-up affect how findings should be interpreted. A published result does not establish that the same outcome will occur for an individual patient. Ask whether the evidence applies to your diagnosis and whether other research supports the conclusion.
Discuss evidence in the consultation
Share the paper or research question when requesting a review so the team understands your interest. Ask how the evidence relates to standard care, investigational options, risks and alternatives.
