Understand which tests are requested
Laboratory tests can support diagnosis, monitor a condition or review treatment, but not every test is useful for every patient. Share the clinician’s request and relevant history. Ask what question each test addresses and whether previous results should be reviewed before collecting another sample.
Check preparation before collection
Some tests require fasting or collection at a particular time; others have no special preparation. Medicines, supplements and recent illness may affect certain results. Confirm the instructions for your specific tests and do not stop medication unless the responsible clinician advises you to do so.
Arrange a results review
Confirm how and when results will be provided and who will interpret them. A value outside a reference range does not by itself establish a diagnosis. If you need a particular test, the coordinator can check availability, collection requirements and the expected reporting process.
