Choose relevant screening priorities
A checkup can be an opportunity to review prevention, risk factors and recommended screening. More tests do not always mean a more useful assessment. Discuss which examinations are appropriate for you, taking account of previous results, family history, lifestyle and any existing medical conditions.
Distinguish screening from symptom assessment
Screening usually looks for problems in people without symptoms. New or persistent symptoms may need a focused consultation instead of a general package. Describe any concerns when enquiring so that the team can clarify the appropriate appointment and whether additional clinical review is needed.
Know what happens after the visit
Ask which items are included, how preparation works, when results are available and whether a clinician will explain them. An abnormal finding may require additional assessment. Bring your medication list, vaccination information and previous screening reports to support a useful discussion.
