Case Study: Spinal Cord Reconstruction Surgery for Spinal Cord Injury

Case History:
Gurjit Brar, a 60-year-old female patient, suffered a spinal cord injury in August 1987 at the T11-12 level due to a car accident. She had no movement below this level. An MRI conducted on 2011-02-05 revealed a post-traumatic wedge compression fracture at T11, with evidence of spinal cord injury, including cord transection and multiple cystic intra-and extra-axial lesions.

Upon admission to Beijing Puhua International Hospital on March 9th, 2016, the patient could not walk, feel her lower extremities, or control bowel or bladder function. She underwent spinal cord reconstruction surgery during which she received nerve grafting from her shank and neural nutrition medicine injected into the injured part. Postoperatively, she was provided rehabilitation training and acupuncture treatment.

Post-treatment improvements (reported after 6 months):

1. Better sleep: Periods of 5-6 hours throughout the night.
2. Improved leg movement: Legs slightly moved to indicate bathroom needs; no leaking incidents, demonstrating better bladder control.
3. Reduced frequency of bathroom visits: No longer needed to go every 3 hours; now visits every 4-5 hours without leaking.
4. Pain reduction: Approximately 40-50% pain reduction on the left side.
5. Hair growth: Noticed hair growth on legs.
6. Improved circulation: Bruising (previously blue/black) is now primarily a flesh tone, and feet occasionally bruise.
7. Reduced swelling: A dramatic decrease in swelling was observed.
8. Improved sensation: Can feel "feeling sensation" in both feet when instructed to move them.
9. Postoperative recovery: The back has fully recovered from surgery with no pain or other sensations.
10. Muscle activity: Can feel leg nerve/muscle attempt to move internally, although there is no external movement yet.
11. Increased sensation: Has considerable sensation in the left leg when held; her mother can also feel restriction even with eyes closed.
12. Spasm reduction: A 90% decrease in leg spasms allows her to now sleep through 6-7 hours without waking up (previously, she could only sleep for 1-2 hours).

Follow-up: The patient's family decided to bring her back to Beijing Puhua International Hospital for further treatment with neural nutrition medicine combined with rehabilitation training and TCM. We look forward to her continued improvement and will strive to help her regain mobility again.
