Nikola and Victor's Treatment for Cerebral Palsy at Beijing Puhua International Hospital

Patient Information:

  • Names: Nikola and Victor
  • Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy
  • Date of Birth: June 20, 2023
  • Gender: Male (twins)
  • Country: Serbia

Initial Presentation and Diagnosis:
Nikola and Victor were born with breathing difficulties and other symptoms, requiring immediate care in the ICU. Although their condition stabilized, developmental delays became apparent soon after. They were diagnosed with cerebral palsy by local medical professionals.

Parents' Initiative for Treatment:
The twins' parents explored various treatment options before learning about Beijing Puhua International Hospital's (BPIH) relevant treatments for Cerebral Palsy. They consulted with Dr. Yang Xiuqing, Director of the Neurology Department at Beijing Tiantan Puhua Hospital, via an online consultation app. After a preliminary assessment, surgery was suggested as a potential treatment option.

Treatment Decision and Travel:
Impressed by BPIH's neurology department and its professional doctors, the parents decided to travel from Serbia with Nikola, Victor, their grandparents, and other family members for the twins' treatment in China.

Admission and Preoperative Assessment:
Upon admission, the neurology team conducted a detailed examination, revealing delayed motor and language development, increased muscle tone, and MRI findings of brain atrophy, white matter dysplasia, and ventricle enlargement. A multidisciplinary MDT consultation was held to discuss and communicate the surgical plan with the parents.

Stereotactic Surgery:
After careful preoperative preparation, the neurology team performed stereotactic surgery on both twins under general anesthesia. The procedure was successful, with postoperative CT scans showing no significant bleeding and accurate target placement.

Postoperative Care and Recovery:
The twins recovered well under the care of the medical staff post-surgery. Before treatment, they had difficulty sitting and standing; however, they were able to sit alone just four days after the operation. Their eye reactions also improved significantly, and their overall condition showed signs of development.

Discharge and Follow-up:
Nikola and Victor were discharged from the hospital and returned home to Serbia. BPIH continues to follow up on the twins' progress.
