Case Study: Spinal Cord Reconstruction Surgery for Spinal Cord Injury

Patient Information:

Medical History:
In April 2010, Mr. Alameni Asem fell from the second floor, resulting in a spinal cord injury at the thoracic levels T9-11. He underwent a reduction operation with posterior fixation by screws and subsequent rehabilitation therapy.

Initial Presentation (December 2010):
Upon admission to Beijing Puhua International Hospital, Mr. Asem was alert and oriented with normal breathing, speech, cognition, and upper limb movements. However, he exhibited paraplegia below the level of his umbilicus with:

  • Loss of sensation to pain and temperature
  • No voluntary movement in lower limbs
  • Urinary and fecal incontinence

Treatment Course (21 days):
Mr. Asem underwent Spinal Cord Reconstruction Surgery along with Neural Growth Factor Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Rehabilitation Therapy.

Post-Treatment Progress:
During his hospitalization, Mr. Asem responded positively to the treatments:

  • Sensation improved from umbilicus level to hip level
  • Experienced an erection one morning after the first injection of neural growth factor
  • Felt pain in his foot during removal of IV needle after the second injection
  • Moved toes voluntarily on the third occasion and could lift feet lightly

Current Status:
Following spinal cord reconstruction treatment, Mr. Alameni Asem has regained sensation in his legs and can move them slightly.

Prognosis:
All medical personnel involved anticipate further improvements in Mr. Asem's condition with continued rehabilitation efforts.
