Essential Tremor Case Study

Case Study: Essential Tremor

Beijing Puhua International Hospital (BPIH) has successfully performed the first Focused Ultrasound operation on May 18, providing relief for a patient suffering from persistent tremor.

Patient Information:

  • Name: Mr. Liu
  • Diagnosis: Essential tremor with Parkinson's disease
  • Date of Birth (D.O.B): August 2, 1955
  • Gender: Male
  • Country: China

Treatment: Focused Ultrasound Therapy

Preoperative Condition:
Mr. Liu, a 67-year-old male, had been diagnosed with essential tremor combined with Parkinson's disease for over a decade. His condition progressively worsened, leading to severe and uncontrollable tremors in his limbs, trunk, and head, making even simple daily tasks like eating or buttoning clothes challenging.

Treatment Process:
On May 18, the medical team at BPIH performed Focused Ultrasound treatment on Mr. Liu under MRI guidance:

  1. Preoperative examination and evaluation were conducted.
  2. The patient's head was prepared, and a head frame was fixed before the operation.
  3. Low-energy ultrasound was applied to identify the initial therapeutic target and assess the patient's response to treatment.
  4. Ultrasonic energy was increased gradually to create precise and controllable ablation foci.
    • A 1.4mm lesion was damaged during the first attempt, allowing Mr. Liu to write his name clearly.
    • A second ablation of 3mm diameter further improved tremor control.
  5. The entire treatment process was monitored in real-time under continuous MRI guidance.

Postoperative Results:

  • No discomfort or adverse reactions were observed after the procedure.
  • Mr. Liu regained the ability to write his name clearly with his right hand immediately post-surgery.
  • On the second day after surgery, he showed no adverse reactions and met the discharge criteria.
  • Family members reported that Mr. Liu could now eat independently, solving a problem that had persisted for over a decade.

Focused Ultrasound Therapy:
This technology combines focused ultrasound with MRI to accurately locate and treat lesions non-invasively and precisely, reducing the risks associated with craniotomy and improving treatment safety and effectiveness.

BPIH Commitment:
Beijing Puhua International Hospital is dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalized treatment programs for patients with neurological diseases. The hospital aims to help patients regain their health and improve their quality of life by introducing innovative technologies like Focused Ultrasound therapy.
